| At the end of the day, UM trumps UF, FSU
Florida State did well, but faltered at the end. Florida did better, but still lost two expected stars. But as national signing day drew to a close Wednesday, it was the University of Miami that became the biggest talk of the state -- and one of the most compelling stories nationally. Despite a 5-7 season, and, perhaps, in large part because of it, Hurricanes coach Randy Shannon pulled off a major coup with what is regarded as one of UM's finest recruiting classes in history. The Hurricanes sprinted down the ''home'' stretch in a fury Wednesday, more than compensating for their lack of wide receivers and linebackers and signing eight of Miami Northwestern's nationally heralded football players. UM didn't have to go far for much of its bounty, signing 18 of 33 players from South Florida -- 13 from Miami-Dade, two from Broward and three from Palm Beach -- who want to resurrect the Canes.
Dunham to Bush: Unindicted co-conspirator in CIA tape case?
If he gets too close to making a compelling case against administration officials Bush might demand Dunham be fired. This could lead to a mini-Saturday Night Massacre where Dunham's immediate superior, acting deputy attorney general Craig S. Morford and Attorney General Mukasey himself resigns. Assuming that the investigation moves past January 20, 2009 before indictments are handed down and trials begin, Bush won't be in a position to grant clemency as he did for Scooter Libby. I'll leave it to the legal experts to determine whether he can issue January 19th pardons to officials who haven't been indicted, let alone convicted. While we may dream of him actually being indicted and tried for this or other crimes, I don't think this is realistic. More likely is that if it can be shown he was informed of the plan to destroy the CIA tapes he'll be an unindicted co-conspirator.
Gilead Submits New Drug Application to U.S. FDA for Aztreonam Lysine ...
Gilead Sciences, Inc. (Nasdaq:GILD) today announced the submission of a New Drug Application (NDA) to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for marketing approval of aztreonam lysine for inhalation (75 mg three times daily), an investigational therapy in development for people with cystic fibrosis (CF) who have pulmonary Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) infection. The NDA is supported by data from two Phase III clinical studies (AIR-CF1 and AIR-CF2) and interim data from an ongoing open-label extension study (AIR-CF3) of patients who participated in AIR-CF1 or AIR-CF2. Aztreonam lysine for inhalation is delivered by the eFlow(R) Electronic Nebulizer (PARI GmbH). "Chronic pseudomonal airway infection represents the single greatest cause of morbidity and mortality for people with cystic fibrosis, and with a limited number of inhaled antibiotics, there remains a significant unmet medical need," said A.
Equating ECs with CEC
They were also calling back the old culling teams for their re-deployment. Bhattacharjee was busy in the partys works in the south 24-parganas during last two days and he could not personally monitor the progress of the bird flu situation vis--vis the culling operation. But Rahman visited the affected districts and supervised the culling operation. He regretted that while in one hand the bird flu situation was gradually normalising in the affected districts, it was spreading in several new areas, making new problems for the state to tackle. He said some areas at Canning town in south 24-parganas, only about 30 km from Sealdah, came under the grip of the bird flu only yesterday. Official sources said so far, of the total target of 30 lakh, about 23 lakh infected birds and chickens had been culled.
New Finding May Help Explain Development Of Preeclampsia
ScienceDaily (Feb. 11, 2008) In a study of pregnant women, those with pregnancy-induced high blood pressure were found to have higher levels of a peptide that raises blood pressure in the pieces of tissue linking mother and fetus, according to researchers at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center. The finding, reported online in the journal Hypertension, may help explain how the disorder develops. .
Talking about HIV and AIDS
Brazil has the highest number of people living with the virus in South America. We support the work of peer educators in the cities of Sao Paulo, Recife and Natal, who have helped 2,355 young people talk about relationships, values and rights and to learn about prevention through discussions and drama activities. Surveys show that 36 per cent of young people aged 15 to 24 had had sex before the age of 15 in Brazil, and 20% reported more than 10 partners. We have recently begun working with 10- to 14-year-olds to ensure they have the knowledge and skills to protect themselves against contracting HIV and AIDS. Our Sissy Aminata programme in Sierra Leone encourages discussion of formerly taboo topics such as safer sex and sexual abuse. The programme produces books and pamphlets with fictional letters sent to an 'agony aunt' Sissy Aminata.
Writedowns set market reeling
Such exposure had already forced it to write down 2.2 billion francs ($2.19 billion) in the three months to September. Credit Suisse also said then that it had managed to contain the impact of the crisis in the US subprime mortgage sector, where a wave of foreclosures has undermined the value of certain mortgage-backed securities. Power loss a blow to wind farm
Predictictions of annual generation for planning and financing, is based on the AVERAGE, not maximum capacity. Consider this analogy. Your automobile may have an engine rated at 100 horsepower (or "hp"). Yet, when cruising the roads, you may only be using 10 hp. Then why not use a 10 hp engine? Because you need the extra horspower in bursts for accelerations from a stop or to pass other cars. That "extra" 90 hp is essential. Likewise, occasional and seasonal winds greater than the average carry vast amounts of energy. A wind turbine rated for 100% maximum power in the average wind would be an engineering and financial stupidity. A wind turbine generating 1/3 of its maximum potential output may , in fact, be running 100% of the time, and be performing exactly as required. How else could it capture the energy of high winter winds if it ran at full maximum in summer calm? This is different than a nuclear reactor.
Australia welcomes fatter postal workers
Australia's postal service isn't changing the scales on its counters, but it has loosened its weight limits for motorcycle staff as it faces a shortage of slender recruits in an increasingly heavy population. Australia Post lifted the maximum weight for letter carriers who ride its 110 cc motorbikes from the previous 198 pounds to 231 pounds. Postal service spokesman Scott McIntyre said Tuesday the change was made solely because the motorbikes' manufacturer, Honda, advised that they could handle the extra weight without "any significant effects on the stability, handling or safety." McIntyre said the maximum amount of mail carried on the motorbikes would remain unchanged at 55 pounds. But a postal union representative, Michael Etue, said Australia Post had struggled to find recruits who weighed less than 198 pounds.
