| TELUS Reports Profit of $400 Million in Fourth Quarter 2007
Vancouver, BC, February 15, 2008--(T-Net)--TELUS Corporation today reported fourth quarter 2007 revenue of $2.33 billion, an increase of 3.4 per cent from a year ago. The performance was driven by nine per cent growth in wireless revenue and seven per cent growth in wireline data revenue, partially offset by declines in local and long distance wireline revenues. Consolidated earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) increased eight per cent to $953 million due to a 14 per cent increase in the wireless segment and two per cent increase in the wireline segment.
Net income in the quarter was $400 million and earnings per share (EPS) was $1.23, up 66 per cent and 73 per cent respectively. Net income and EPS included favourable tax related adjustments of approximately $143 million or 44 cents per share, compared to $20 million or six cents a year ago.
19 deaths at VA traced to poor care
ST. LOUIS - Substandard care at a southern Illinois Veterans Affairs hospital may have contributed to 19 deaths over the past two years, a VA official said Monday as he apologized to affected families and pledged reform. The hospital in Marion, Ill., initially drew scrutiny over deaths connected to a single surgeon, but two federal reports found fault with five other doctors. The hospital undertook many surgeries that its staffing or lack of proper surgical expertise made it ill-equipped to handle, and hospital administrators were too slow to respond once problems surfaced, said Dr. Michael Kussman, U.S. veterans affairs undersecretary for health. .
BMW cars that you can't crash
London: German automobile manufacturer BMW has installed the Active Cruise Control system in its 5 and 6 Series cars, which automatically stops the vehicle to avert an accident without having to use the breaks.
The system uses a radar beam to constantly measure the distance to the vehicles in front of it. A driver can set the desired speed and distance to be maintained from the car in front, and then sit back and do next to nothing.
Once activated, the system enables the car to drive on its own, with the only exception that the driver needs to control the steering. It can slow the vehicle a complete stop when necessary, and later scoot back up to the set speed as soon as traffic allows.
The system breaks the car even when someone veers across three lanes to cut you off.
