Amy used to tell me how she talks to Kristen every day," Carol said. "I know she's talking to her now." In just 21 years, Amy touched the lives of so many around her. She attended Bourne High School, and worked for years at the Dunkin' Donut on Cranberry Highway in Wareham. She didn't have a best friend. Just about everybody was her best friend...

Mugwumps can save America

The No Child Left Behind education reform would attract married mothers. The faith-based initiative, opposition to abortion and Bush's coded religious language would motivate lower-income white evangelical Christians. A promised amnesty for illegal immigrants was intended to woo Hispanics. And so on, all the way down to a last-minute commitment to protect West Virginia steel from foreign competition.

This method of policymaking by analogy has not served America or the Bush Administration well. As a professor of mine used to remark: "History never repeats itself - it only appears to do so, to those who neglect the details." And so it proved.

Unlike Hanna's campaign of 1896, Rove's campaigns of 2000 and 2004 were not huge Republican triumphs - and they do not seem likely to lead to an era of Republican political dominance.

Security shambles as airport is invaded for third night in row

Also, history is important to remember here. It was a decision at the UN, rightly or wrongly, that formed the state of Isreal following the WWII. Unfortunately, we will need to live with that.

But one way to get the Middle East focused on their own problems and get the West out of the game in the region is to become less dependent on their natural resources.

Bacteria crawling on fountains and workout mats at city's gyms

Dangerous germs lurking around city gyms may be making you sick, the Daily News has found.

A News spot check of health clubs - including several of the city's most expensive gyms - uncovered potentially harmful bacteria lingering all over exercise mats, bicycles, drinking fountains and other surfaces.

The germs could easily make you ill - especially if you're rundown, elderly or have a compromised immune system, experts said.

The equipment posing the highest risks are cardiovascular machines used by many people in quick succession and equipment, including dumbbells or mats, that are passed around.

"I believe it," said Alex Marquez, 34, from Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, who ended up taking antibiotics in a hospital after his foot swelled from an infection doctors said was caught at the gym.

Bode Miller takes Italian downhill

Bode Miller has had a tough time since breaking away from the US Ski Team. He finally broke though for his first victory of the season on Saturday on one of the toughest downhill courses on the World Cup circuit.

The coaches and staff members that Miller hired for himself this season were starting to get nervous that their gamble might not pay off.

"I think they were getting ready to kill me if I didn't win a race soon," Miller said. "They've been taking it much harder than I do. I obviously want to win and I take it tough when I make mistakes, but for them they have no control over it all, and they see the way I've been training and how much work we've put into it."

Miller finished in the top eight in six of his first 15 races this season.

This time, while the other favorites had trouble, Miller put down a near-perfect run and covered the 3.270km Stelvio course in 2 minutes, 0.57 seconds.
