| The Watch: Closed strip mall black eye in West Side neighborhood
Is there a problem in your neighborhood? Tell The Watch. Each Tuesday, The Dispatch features a problem from Columbus, its suburbs and surrounding counties and explains how officials are working -- or not working -- to fix it. Then we'll keep watch to make sure they keep their word. Call The Watch hot line at 614-461-8731 or send an e-mail to thewatch@dispatch.com. The Briggs Road strip center is a sore spot for its West Side neighbors. The shopping strip at 2732 Briggs Rd., near Briggs High School, was built in 1962. The grocery store, beauty shop and bar that once served the neighborhood vanished long ago. Sections of the roof collapsed, leading to water damage in the building's interior, according to Columbus inspectors' reports. "If this place was in (Upper) Arlington or Grandview (Heights), it wouldn't even be here," said Don Fritch, who lives nearby.
Border Wall Slashes Through Texas’ Soul
On a Saturday afternoon, I ride my bike through the streets of downtown Brownsville, Texas. I pass old brick storefronts on both sides with boarded second stories and wrought iron balconies, tributes to a city that boomed in the late 19th century. Between streets that bear the names of U.S. presidents - Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe - is a crumbling cemetery with gravestones dating far back into Brownsville's past. The concrete walls are worn to expose rusted rebar, but the cemetery is aflutter with eye-catching fabric flowers, bright as the day they were dyed.I pass through Washington Park and smile, knowing that it will be packed in a few weeks with musicians and fans, that tejano, grupero and mariachi will wail at a three-day party, Charro Days - the South Texas equivalent of Mardis Gras or Carnival.
On Native Ground
If you are Mohammed Omer, you become a journalist. I had a chance this week to meet with Omer, a 22-year-old freelance journalist and photographer from Israeli-occupied Gaza. He was in 'Most of the carnage goes unseen in the American news media, which Omer says is totally biased in favor of Israel...' Brattleboro, Vt., to give a talk about his life and work, part of a U.S. speaking tour sponsored by the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs. This young man has seen much death and destruction in his lifetime, but unlike many reporters, he didn't have to go look for it. Instead, it found him. Omer has lived his entire life in Rafah, a refugee camp near the Egyptian border. He said that growing up, he wanted to be a translator and work for the Red Cross or a similar non-governmental organization.

House and Senate members whose districts are in each congressional district participate in the vote, usually by secret ballot. In Anderson's case, 14 Republicans and 14 Democrats will decide. And two Democratic names have been floated as opponents to the Statesboro resident. But on Thursday, Anderson may have picked up some bipartisan support. Before the governor spoke, state Sen. Regina Thomas of Savannah, a Democrat, told the crowd to expect "the status quo" after the dust has settled. Deadline approaches for quarry appeal responses
Ian Southcott, UK community affairs manager for Cemex, said as well as lodging the appeal the company had also submitted a revised application, seeking permission to operate the coating plant round the clock on no more than 60 days a year. He said: "Although this will reduce flexibility, the company believes it represents a reasonable compromise. It should be remembered that the original application never envisaged round the clock operations throughout the year but was so presented to provide the flexibility to meet demand when it arose." Mr Southcott also said if the revised application was successful, the appeals would be withdrawn. A fourth application by Cemex to extend the existing limestone quarry towards Charfield is yet to be discussed by the council's planning committee.

Sure, sure, it's all been done before, but now I get to do it. Without further ado, here is my all-name team. 20 - Rod Smart - Who the Hell is Rod Smart you ask? Well he is none other than the fool who called himself "He Hate Me" and pretty much epitomized the debacle that was the XFL. 19. Elbert L. "Ickey" Woods - Running back his entire carreer for the Bengals. Hey, how many guys not named Humpty Hump have a dance named after them. The Ickey Shuffle remains high on the all time celebrations list. 18. "Chocolate Thunder" Darryl Dawkins - Perhaps more appropriate for wrestling or porn, but still has a nice ring to it. 17. "Pistol" Pete Maravich - LSU grad was a known practicioner of yoga, a part time ufologist, and could also play a little basketball. Died of a heart attack in 1988 at a young age.
