SERT students complete second session of training

This is the second in a series of articles following some of the Kern Valley High students as they take part in SERT training course.

On Friday, Feb. 1, the ECHO (Exploring Careers in Health Occupations) students at Kern Valley High School began their second module of SERT (Student Emergency Response Team) training, which is Fire Suppression and Safety.

The curriculum for the SERT course, which takes place in Tom Evans' fourth-period ECHO Health Technology class every Friday, was adapted for Kern Valley High School by Vickie Stacy, ECHO coordinator, and Tom Klein, the Kern River Valley CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) originator who brought CERT to the valley in 2004.

KRV CERT is a group of Kern Valley residents who have volunteered their time to train under FEMA guidelines and assist first responders when a disaster strikes.

Skincare Science: Research about Four Skin Care Health Foods

Skincare-News.com introduces research about fruits and vegetables that are being harvested for their potent skin-boosting benefits.

Sacramento, CA (PRWEB) February 19, 2008 -- Skincare is more than just chemicals and science. Skincare-News.com's latest article, "Ingredients that Heal," investigates how four super-foods contribute to skin health: pomegranates, grapefruits, pumpkins, and mushrooms. While scientific advancements are surely leading to breakthrough products that heal the skin and body, sometimes, a more natural approach to healing can't be beat.

From the Romans who imported pomegranates from Libya to its presence during the Han and Sung dynasties in China, it seems that countries around the world have always agreed on one thing when it comes to the pomegranate: health and prosperity.

Student shot at Mitchell High; second school shooting in 8 days

Mitchell High School senior Sharmain Mayes weeps for her friend Stacey Kiser as her mother Shaundra Mayes takes her out of school following a shooting that left Kiser in critical condition. Kiser, 19, was shot in the school's cafeteria during a PE class that contained about 75 students. The shooter, a 17-year-old sophmore, was taken into custody after turning the gun over to assistant football coach Darryl Mongomery immediately following the shooting.

Call to halt the cowboy surgeons

THE lack of regulation of cosmetic surgery is a national disgrace that allows "shonky" and underqualified practitioners to peddle treatments that can be harmful in the wrong hands.

Plastic surgeons and cosmetic physicians are calling for tighter safeguards - including audits of qualifications, facilities and post-operative complications - to protect the public from cowboy operators.

Restrictions are so lax that nurses and even beauty therapists are offering treatments such as Botox injections and photo rejuvenation therapy with powerful intense pulse light (IPL) lasers.

In one complaint reported to Victoria's health department, a woman had three IPL treatments for hair removal at a beauty salon, but when these were unsuccessful she was advised to return for higher-intensity therapy.

No science in the PM’s ear: Canada dismisses National Science ...

You cannot shoot down good science unless you have good alternative scientific evidence to back it up.

Politics, on the other hand, is affected profoundly by opinion. Politicians need to please everyone to gain votes. So, when a scientific study points out a serious problem such as climate change and a solution that requires a hard decision about reducing carbon emissions, the politician must consider the effect of that decision on jobs (votes), industry (financial support), and public opinion (votes).

At the same time, those who feel threatened by a scientific finding, such as polluting industries, will lobby the government with their own experts who try to dismiss or cast doubt on the original finding. Notice I said dismiss or cast doubt. Industry-hired guns seldom arrive on the scene with their own evidence from experiments they performed and published that counter the mainstream idea.

Instant Analysis: Martinsville

You've got to impressed with Hamlin, who's fifth. Martinsville is a very tough track to race on for the inexperienced and he's doing a great job.

Lap 158: Order out is Johnson, Gordon, Stewart, Earnhardt, Hamlin, Raines, Schrader, Nemechek, Kurt Busch and Kyle Busch. Martin is 11th, Harvick, 13th, Kenseth 15th, Kahne 23rd and Burton 25th.

Lap 157: Lead-lap cars pit. And with only 23 cars on lead lap, it makes pit road a lot less crowded.

Caution 3 Lap 156: Caution No. 3. David Stremme spins in Turn 3, with an assist from Jamie McMurray. Kahne gets the Lucky Dog.

Lap 153: Johnson moves into the lead again.

Lap 150: Gordon leads Johnson by 0.256 seconds. Then it's Stewart, Earnhardt, Raines, Hamlin, Schrader, Kurt Busch, Nemechek and Kyle Busch.

Police Violence and Abuses in Detention

Street children are arrested and locked up arbitrarily, sometimes merely for being homeless, other times for such vague offenses as "creating a public scandal," or "loitering." There are no government programs for street children, the vast majority of whom were abandoned or abused by their families.

Once children are arrested, they may spend months in pre-adjudication detention, often solely because they have no family to claim them. When they do receive their hearing, their due process rights may be ignored by the judge: several children told us that judges had refused to let them speak, or had banished them from the room while hearing evidence against them. These children are not supplied with legal assistance of any kind. Sentences vary enormously, often according to children's economic status.
